Few properties have the instant familiarity of rigidity. This is the property, after all, that defines what is solid. Given this familiarity, it is intriguing that the nature of rigidity and, specifically, the manner by which it appears out of the liquid state, represents some of the most elusive challenges remaining in our fundamental description of the materials world. This talk will present an introduction to some of the great advances in our understanding of the kinetics of crystallization and the glass transition and an overview of the challenges that remain in developing a coherent physical account of how rigidity emerges.
